Exactly why am I doing this?

So for the first of my daily blogging venture, I’ve decided to tell why I’ve started blogging and how I got started with my website as a whole.

I’ve owned “stephenmbenn.com” for about three years now.  I bought it just because I wanted my email addresses to have “@stephenmbenn.com” on them instead of “@gmail.com”. I think this adds another level of professionalism to my business cards and resume when people notice that I have my own email accounts.  (I use Google Apps for them.)

Anyhow, my website has been inactive for almost the entire time I’ve owned it. I’ve used it to show clients their web projects I was working on, but that’s about it.

About two weeks ago, I decided to make my own business cards. After designing them, I loved the look of them and decided to create my “personal brand”. This included business cards, resume updates, and a website where I can display current projects, other websites I’ve done, and anything else that promotes my brand. (I’ll be doing a post on personal branding in the very near future.)

I don’t know where it came from, but once I got started, I’ve had a drive to keep working on my website to implement the vision I have for it. After completing my homepage, resume section, and contact page, I thought I was done, but then I came across a few articles about personal websites.

I saw some that I really liked and they all had blogs so I said, “Why not?” Since I know content management systems pretty well, I knew it would be easy to add a blog to what I had already completed.

I went ahead and set everything up. In my free time during class and in the afternoons, I worked on getting some content in the blog. I thought once I had a decent amount of things posted, I would take a break from blogging and just occasionally post.

I was wrong.

I’ve really enjoy sharing my thoughts and posting about projects I’m working on.  I’ve posted in forums before, but those are all limited to my automotive projects.  While I enjoy sharing those, it’s nice to be able to share some of the many other thoughts in my overactive mind.

I talk a lot, but not about very many things. It’s nice to be able to put some of the things that stay in my head all day out in the open. Blogging has become one of the highlights of my day. While I hope to share some things on my mind, I also hope I can post some knowledge filled content that can be of use to others as well. I have a constantly growing list of topics I want to cover so I think I’ll be able to do that.

And here you have it! This is how and why I started my blog which I think will be going for a pretty long time!
